Oakland County Democrats on Monday announced plans to reintroduce their Hire Michigan First plan, which proposes to reward companies that employ Michigan workers and penalizes companies that hire undocumented workers.
Democrats in the state Legislature scheduled appearances around the state to push the program, including stops in Detroit, Macomb County, Grand Rapids, Bay City, Wayne County and Royal Oak in Oakland County.
"It's ridiculous that our tax dollars would create jobs for workers from other states and countries when our residents are willing, able and looking for work," said Rep. Jim Townsend, D-Royal Oak. "Hire Michigan First will help put Michigan residents to work while ensuring companies that accept state incentives to create jobs keep their promises."
Rep. Ellen Cogen Lipton, D-Huntington Woods, also supports the plan. "The state can't be handing out tax incentives with no way to track how many jobs are created."
The Michigan House passed the Hire Michigan First plan multiple times in past legislative sessions, but key provisions were gutted by the Republican-controlled Senate.
The new effort may be even less relevant, given the current makeup of the Legislature. The Nov. 2 election gave Republicans control of the House, Senate and governor's office.
