On the heels of President Barack Obama's visit to the GM assembly plant in Orion Township Friday, U.S. Rep. Gary Peters announced Saturday he's won the endorsement of labor groups in his bid to win the newly drawn 14th Congressional District seat in 2012.
Peters currently represents the 9th Congressional District but a new district map good for the next 10 years combined that district with that of Sander Levin, D-Royal Oak. Peters opted to run in the 14th next year instead of facing a runoff with Levin.
Peters claims the endorsements of the Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council, the Detroit Building Trades Council, the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 324, and the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights.
Peters is expected to face a Democratic primary next years against first-term U.S. Rep. Hansen Clarke of Detroit, who currently represents the 13th District. But current 14th District Rep. John Conyers, a Detroit Democrat, has also filed in the 13th District and Clarke faces a primary in whichever district he opts to run in.
Michigan lost a congressional seat because of redistricting this year. With the Republican-controlled state Legislature drawing new district maps, Democrats are sure to lose one of their seats in 2012, setting up primaries between either Peters and Clarke or Clarke and Conyers.
